Nova Vita Alliance (CEO)
I would like to start off by sharing my personal journey. As I am not just the founder of Nova Vita, I am also a Peer. My name is Joyce Lao, and I came to the U.S. from China in 2008. Growing up in a single-parent home, I learned early on that stability and a sense of belonging aren't a given. Especially being female in China. To build a life in a new country, I worked over 50 hours a week while attending college full-time, often holding down two jobs just to make ends meet. I had to really discipline myself while constantly being told I would never make it!
That experience taught me that when a person has a safe place to land, they can truly pursue their dreams. During my years here in the U.S. I have noticed that many people who also need that second chance are being overlooked and discriminated against because of their past, especially in disadvantaged communities within and beyond the Bay Area.
This is why I founded Nova Vita Alliance. We believe that everyone deserves a chance to be reborn. I wanted to turn my own house into a shelter of hope, providing a solid foundation for any individual struggling. Here, there is no discrimination—only understanding and support. All lives matter.
I truly believe that when we give people a “genuinely safe foundation”, their power is limitless! Nova Vita Alliance builds that “special” place for them. A place they can finally call “HOME”! It isn't just one of my houses; it's a home where these individuals can heal, bravely chase their dreams, find a sense of belonging, with the support and the momentum to move forward.

The mission of Nova Vita Alliance is to provide safe, stable transitional housing for all individuals who would like a second chance to become serious about living; to become entrepreneurs, to create, to love one self, regain their momentum and start a new life.
